When is the Workshop?
The WB Emerging Film Directors Workshop will be held over the course of several months in Burbank. We will announce the participants at the end of this August. The fall season will be focused on developing the scripts, learning to pitch, casting, and beginning soft prep. The first few months of 2017 will be spent prepping the films and then shooting them. The shoots will most likely be staggered so that one participant is shooting at a time. Then the films will go into post production. The Workshop will culminate with a film festival on the WB lot in June of 2017.

What should I submit for a Short Film Proposal?
The short film can be any genre but must be an original idea. A few important things in mind:

  1. You must achieve principal photography over the course of approx. 4 days or less.
  2. All photography of the short film must be achieved on the Warner Bros. back lot (i.e. it is possible to use sound stages and create a number of interiors, but you will not be able to shoot new material of exteriors that require you or your crew to travel off of the WB back lot).
  3. The runtime of the film must be no less than 7 minutes.
  4. The entire budget for the short film must not exceed $100,000(USD)

There is no one format you must adhere to in your proposal. This is a creative pursuit, so please feel free to be creative. A few suggestions: In a concise way, try to describe the tone, themes, and aspirations of the film. You might also provide information that convey to us your key characters, overall plot, story beats, setting, and visuals.

Above all, the most important thing to remember is that we want you to tell the story that is most reflective of your specific voice and style.

Where will the Workshop take place?
The program will take place on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank over the course of several months, so participants need to be local during that time. Participants should provide their own residence and transportation for the duration of the program.

Can non-local candidates apply?
During the interview process, if the candidate is not local, we can conduct the interview via Skype. We will not provide housing for non-local participants. If you are not a United States citizen, you must have a passport or visa, that allows you to travel to the US. We do not sponsor visas. And you must speak and write in fluent English.

Will the participants be paid?
Participants will receive a stipend that is in accordance with California State Law.

I was trying to finish my application one hour before it closed, and the files didn’t go through. Can I PLEASE get an extension?
Just remember, folks, technical difficulties are a real thing.  We recommend not waiting until the last day/hour/minute/second to submit! Mainly because, no, sorry, we can’t extend the deadline. Even if it’s a technical difficulty that bounced you that wasn’t technically your fault, you’ve still missed the deadline! Remember to allow yourself enough time to make sure everything gets uploaded properly. And remember – there’s always next year.

What if I left off information online; can I go back and change it or do I need to resubmit from the start?
If you have saved your application but not submitted, you may go back and change as many times as you like. Use your login and password up until 11:59 pm PDT on June 30th to enter back into your submission. But once you have submitted your application, there’s no going back — you can no longer make changes.

I am having trouble uploading a PDF. What do I do?
We recommend updating your browser to the most recent version. Older browsers — especially Firefox on a Mac — can be difficult clients when handling uploads. Still having trouble? Use the more recent versions of Google Chrome or Safari. Please remember that the application must be completed by the deadline, so do not wait to the last minute to start upgrading your browser and uploading the submission materials!

Can I take a picture of the submission agreement and upload that?

My Digital Submission is top secret. How can I send it to you?
We are not able to accept password-encrypted shares. If you would like to privately share a video without publicly posting it to a service like YouTube, we suggest using a private link on a file share site such as Dropbox. You can find out more by looking at the dropbox help site, or here: https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/20

I have some questions about the submission agreement:

What do I put on the line under “I am submitting to you herewith certain material described as follows (the”material”):”
Please use this space to type or write in the name of your original short film proposal.

On the the second page of the agreement, under “Very truly yours,” do I sign or print?
Please sign your full legal name.

On the bottom of page two of the submission agreement, do I need to sign or add anything to the section “Agreed”? Or is this for WB to sign?
Do not write anything in that field. Warner Bros. will complete the final field that says “AGREED: WARNER BROS. PICTURES, a division of WB STUDIO ENTERPRISES, INC., By: _______”

Can I get feedback on my submission?
Due to the expected high volume of applications, we cannot give individual feedback on every submission.

When will I hear from you?
Due to volume, we won’t be able to respond individually to each applicant, but we will be sending notifications to everyone at the end of the review process around the end of August.

Can my representation submit my material for me?

Is it okay if I have representation?

I’ve registered but have not received the activation e-mail. What do I do?
If you are having trouble activating your email, your registration may be still pending your verification. Please check your spam filter. Alternately, please try adding the email address “[email protected]” to your contacts and then try re-sending your activation.

To have an activation email re-sent to you:

1) Go to the login page here:

3) After hitting the “Log In” button you will see a link to re-send your activation email.

Is there ANY circumstance that would allow me to have an extension on the submission deadline?
No. To be fair to everyone who submits, extensions will not be granted.

If I live near Burbank, can I drop off my submission in person?
All submissions must be uploaded through the website. Writing samples that are mailed in or dropped off will not be accepted.
